Six speeches given at meetings of Ohio Know-Nothings in 1853-1857. Included are references to debates with the Democratic legislature over taxation (1854), riot in Cincinnati (1854), Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and other commercial associations, Know-Nothings' endorsement of Millard Fillmore's Presidential campaign (1856), and a campaign for a change in the municipal affairs (1857). Contents: Two speeches "read July 11 1855" on the transformation of the Know-Nothings into a "National party" (ff. 1-12); 2. "Admitting foreigners," 1856, June 4 (ff. 12-17); 3. Millard Fillmore was born in Cayuga County, N.Y. and later became a resident of East Aurora and Buffalo. He was a lawyer, local office holder, State Assemblyman, U.S. Congressman, N.Y. State Comptroller, Vice-President under Zachary Taylor and 13th U.S. President, 1850-1853. He was also involved in establishing numerous Buffalo institutions.
